Aspiring teachers in New Mexico have a new resource with the launch of TEACHNewMexico.org. The platform offers free career tools, personalized guidance from current educators, and up to $100 toward application costs. This initiative aims to address teacher shortages in the state by providing financial aid assistance, test prep support, and help navigating educator preparation programs.
"TEACHNewMexico.org is strengthening our existing pathways to becoming an educator," said Public Education Secretary Mariana D. Padilla. "Research shows that highly qualified teachers are the number one factor in student success. Strong teachers not only increase academic achievement of their students, but they also hold high standards that motivate students to persist in school and feel connected and capable."
The state's educator pathways include various entry points into teaching. Opportunities such as Educators Rising target high school students interested in teaching, while NM Educator Fellows offers paid roles for aspiring teachers completing coursework. The TeachUp Scholarship covers full tuition, fees, and books for future educators at San Juan College and Western New Mexico University. Additionally, residency and alternative licensure programs provide job-embedded training and mentoring through initiatives like the University of New Mexico’s District Partner Teacher Residency and CNM’s Indigenous Teacher Preparation Project.
