El Palacio magazine has been recognized nationally with an award from the National Federation of Press Women. Editor Emily Withnall received third place for editing a single page, specifically for the article "Jean Toomer’s Search for Identity in Taos" by Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, featured in the Spring 2024 issue. The award was part of the organization's Professional Communications Contest.
Earlier this year, El Palacio also garnered six awards from the New Mexico Press Women. These included first-place honors for Editing for Print or Online Publications and Magazine/Magapaper for "Jean Toomer’s Search for Identity in Taos," edited by Withnall, as well as Single Photography on any Subject for "Sand & Stone" by Cara Romero.
"I am honored by the recognition of my editing and credit the article’s writer, Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, for the award as well. It’s a pleasure to edit work by writers as stellar as Wellington," said Withnall. She added her gratitude to NFPW for their role in promoting quality communications nationwide.
The NFPW contest occurs annually and includes various categories such as writing, editing, and photography. After winning first place in two categories with New Mexico Press Women, El Palacio submitted these entries to the national competition. The third-place win was announced this month, with awards set to be presented at the National Communications Conference Award Banquet in Colorado this September.
El Palacio is published by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and has been in circulation since 1913. It focuses on art, culture, and history related to New Mexico's state museums and cultural institutions.
