The School of Law Clinical Program has expanded its services by hiring a licensed clinical social worker, enhancing the support provided to students and reinforcing its multidisciplinary approach to legal education. This development is part of a multi-year partnership with Bernalillo County, aiming to offer students a well-rounded education based on real-world experience and foster innovation for New Mexicans' needs.

In May, Lucía Fraire joined the program in this new role. Fraire, an Albuquerque native, holds a master's degree in social work from the University of Washington, obtained in 2017. Her career includes work in medical and mental health settings and research and facilitation.

Social workers in legal settings provide vital assistance by addressing challenges like housing instability, food insecurity, and access to mental health resources. Fraire's role complements student-provided legal services by tackling clients' broader social and emotional needs. She will also train students, faculty, and staff on trauma-informed approaches and empathy-based interactions.

Serge Martinez, Associate Dean of Experiential Learning, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “This inter-professional collaboration between the Clinical Program and a social worker is one of the most exciting things we’ve done in a while." He noted that lawyers often face limitations when helping clients with non-legal issues.

“We are trained to put out fires... Adding a social worker to our team means that we can help our clients discover and access resources that go beyond the immediate problem they’re facing," Martinez continued.

The partnership underscores the broader ecosystem of resources and gaps in New Mexico, promoting discussions on how the legal community can build more responsive support systems through multidisciplinary collaboration.
