The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is currently reviewing a Stage 1 Abatement Plan submitted by the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM). The plan addresses contamination at a former waste site on North Hill Road in Algodones. Submitted on June 23, 2025, the plan aims to assess environmental contamination from office waste disposal linked to the now-closed Algodones Generating Station. This station operated as a natural gas and fuel oil-fired steam electric power facility from 1954 to 1987.

PNM's proposal involves investigating and developing a strategy for removing the dumping site. NMED will either approve the plan or request modifications before resubmission. The Stage 1 Plan is a legal requirement in New Mexico for sites that may affect groundwater quality due to spills, leaks, unlined dumps, or legacy industrial waste.

For further details about the plan, interested parties can contact Noel Hernandez of the State Cleanup Program at (505) 660-8497 or via email at noel.hernandez@env.nm.gov or ros.general@env.nm.gov. NMED has issued this notice under regulation 20.6.2.4108 (A) NMAC.
