Rebecca Dow, a House Representative from New Mexico, said that Republican-led states are experiencing declining gas prices while cautioning that Democrats might implement higher fuel taxes. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
"While prices at the pump are dropping in red states, many blue states are stagnant or rising," said Rebecca L. Dow, New Mexico State Representative for 38th District (R). "Elections have consequences. Vote red!"
New Mexico's average gas price stood at $3.34 per gallon as of July 2025, slightly above the national average. Lawmakers are currently debating bills aimed at providing temporary fuel tax relief and reforms to mitigate the impact of price spikes on consumers. Proposed measures include short-term tax holidays and adjustments to tax indexing, balancing road funding with affordability, according to AAA and local policy trackers.
Newsweek's review of state data indicates that Republican-led states have averaged lower gasoline taxes (29.2¢ per gallon) compared to Democratic-led states (approximately 33.3¢ per gallon) over recent years. This has contributed to marginally lower pump prices in many GOP states compared to their Democratic counterparts.
The Tax Foundation reports that New Mexico's gas tax has remained at 18.88¢ per gallon since before 2024, which is lower than neighboring Colorado (22¢) and Texas (20¢). State pump prices have mainly followed national trends rather than changes in state tax policy, reflecting stability amid national price fluctuations.
