State Sen. Block: One Big Beautiful Bill 'does much more good than bad'

State Senator Jay Block of New Mexico has said that the One Big Beautiful Bill delivers tax relief, protects American jobs, and secures the border. He warned that failure to pass it would have harmed families with tax hikes. The statement was made on X.

"While the bill is not perfect, it does much more good than bad," said Jay C Block, New Mexico State Senator from 12th District (R). "If this didn't pass, it would have huge negative consequences for American families with large tax hikes. We can't afford it. This bill brings tax relief, supports American autoworkers, unleashes our energy capabilities to lower costs, secures our border, invests in our military, protects our people, and more!"

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), as discussed by Block, is a comprehensive $4.5 trillion reconciliation package. It includes permanent extensions of 2017 Trump-era tax cuts alongside reforms in border security, energy, and social spending. The bill passed the Senate on July 1, 2025, with a narrow 51–50 vote where Vice President Vance cast the deciding vote. It now awaits approval from the House amid intense partisan debate. According to Vox, the bill provides tax breaks on tips, overtime, car loans, and State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions while reducing clean-energy incentives and cutting Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

According to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the bill offers an estimated $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. This includes making permanent the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and adding new deductions for tip income, overtime, car loan interest, and expanded SALT deductions. The CBO also predicts primary deficits of $3.3 trillion over ten years, rising to over $3.9 trillion once interest is included, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB). These provisions could deliver around $200–300 monthly in tax relief to typical households.

The act increases border and defense spending by $175 billion and allocates $46.5 billion for border walls and deportations while accelerating cuts to clean energy tax credits—rolling back solar and wind incentives by roughly 30%—and injecting $150 billion into manufacturing and autoworker support. According to AP News, this marks a significant shift from previous policies where clean energy and social programs had outweighed industrial subsidies.

Jay C. Block is a Republican New Mexico State Senator for District 12 who was sworn in January 2025 after serving over 20 years in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel and nuclear weapons consultant, according to Ballotpedia. He currently sponsors bills related to tax rebates, veteran affairs, and governmental accountability while serving on several committees including Health & Public Affairs; Rules; Economic & Rural Development; Military & Veterans’ Affairs.
