The New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission has announced the launch of "NM 1776," a statewide initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This effort aims to connect the national celebration with New Mexico's unique history and explore democratic principles through a local perspective.

Established by Senate Bill 106, the Commission is tasked with organizing this significant commemoration. It plans to collaborate with various partners to host educational, cultural, and community events across New Mexico.

"Our vision for NM 1776 is to bring context and color to the founding of the United States by putting it in conversation with New Mexico at the same historic moment in time," said Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. She emphasized an inclusive approach that reflects New Mexico’s diverse cultures and contributions to American history.

The initiative will focus on themes such as historical identity, independence, and New Mexico's contributions. Activities will include exhibitions, educational materials, community programs, social media storytelling, and contests. The branding for NM 1776 will highlight New Mexico's historical significance and cultural diversity under the theme "One Land, Many Stories."

A dedicated website will provide information and resources leading up to July 4, 2026. The Commission encourages participation from all New Mexicans in shaping this initiative by visiting nm1776.org for updates and engagement opportunities.
