Stefani Lord, a House Representative from New Mexico, has criticized State Senator Bill Sharer for his support of higher alcohol taxes and alignment with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's agenda. Lord expressed her views on the social media platform X, stating that such positions contradict the needs of working families.
"One of the Governor's allies is State Sen. Bill Sharer, Republican, who previously attempted to hike alcohol taxes—a move that disproportionately hurts working families—and stood in vehement opposition to calls for Lujan Grisham's impeachment after she unconstitutionally suspended Second Amendment rights in 2023," said Lord, New Mexico State Representative for 22nd District (R). "Now, Sharer is moonlighting as a spin doctor, teaming up with Tedrow, the owner of A Gold Star Academy & Child Development Center, to claim New Mexico is a “national success story! That's crazy talk!"
State Senator Bill Sharer, who was recently elected as the New Mexico Senate Republican leader, has been criticized by some within his party for collaborating with Governor Lujan Grisham on issues like public safety. According to Source NM, while some Republicans accuse him of being overly cooperative, others commend his focus on productive negotiation.
According to the University of New Mexico, a proposed $0.25-per-drink alcohol tax could generate approximately $154 million annually. The measure is expected to reduce alcohol consumption by nearly 10%, prevent over 50 deaths and 300 violent incidents per year. However, it would disproportionately impact heavier drinkers and higher-income families.
AP News reports that since 2020, House Republicans have filed at least three impeachment resolutions against Governor Lujan Grisham. These include efforts by Stefani Lord and John Block; however, none have advanced to public hearings or a vote, highlighting partisan divisions but resulting in little legislative progress.
Lord has served as a Republican New Mexico House Representative for District 22 since 2021. Known for her focus on gun rights, transparency, and family values, she serves as Ranking Member on the Consumer & Public Affairs Committee according to Ballotpedia.
