The New Mexico Museum of Art will host a retrospective exhibition titled "Gustave Baumann: The Artist’s Environment," showcasing the work of one of New Mexico's most renowned artists. The exhibition will begin in the Beauregard Gallery on July 18, 2025, and expand to all four galleries in the museum's original Plaza building by August 15 and September 26.

Gustave Baumann, who lived from 1881 to 1971, arrived in New Mexico in 1918 and became a significant figure in Santa Fe's art community. Known for his detailed woodblock prints, Baumann also engaged in painting, sculpture, drawing, marionette-making, and furniture design. His work reflects the Southwest's vibrancy and diversity.

The exhibition will explore various phases of Baumann’s career and the environments that influenced his art. It will draw primarily from the museum’s collection and is organized thematically to highlight key influences such as regional ecology, Puebloan and Hispano cultures, storytelling through marionettes, and international modernist movements.

"This exhibition is about more than one artist," said Interim Director Laura Mueller, PhD. "It’s about how an artist can help define a place—its spirit, its look, its stories—for generations. Baumann shaped how the world sees New Mexico, and how New Mexicans see themselves."

Highlights include rarely seen preliminary sketches and process materials that offer insight into Baumann’s printmaking techniques. Visitors can trace the development of a print from sketch to final impression.

The exhibition will be presented across four galleries: Beauregard Gallery (July 18 - December 14), New Wing (August 15 - February 22), Goodwin Gallery (September 26 - January 11), and Clarke Gallery (September 26 - February 1). Public programs, workshops, gallery talks, and a catalog will accompany the exhibition.

The New Mexico Museum of Art aims to create experiences that deepen understanding and enjoyment of art throughout the state. With over 20,000 pieces in its collection, it connects global art with local culture.
