The scoring began in the 10th minute when Jaylin Lindsey headed in a free kick from Akale, giving New Mexico an early advantage. Despite nearly doubling their lead in the second half, Akale's shot went wide, keeping the score at 1-0 by halftime.
In the second half, Akale committed a foul leading to a penalty for San Antonio. Mitchell Taintor converted it to equalize at 1-1 in the 54th minute. Five minutes later, Thomas Amang assisted Akale's shot that deflected off goalkeeper Richard Sanchez into the net, restoring New Mexico's lead.
San Antonio equalized again in the 75th minute. However, Andres Paredes received his second yellow card before full-time, reducing San Antonio to ten players. New Mexico capitalized on this with Fernando scoring after McKinze Gaines set him up for a header that put them ahead 3-2.
Fernando and Vargas added another goal shortly after, sealing the victory at 4-2. This win brings New Mexico United to 25 points this season, placing them firmly at the top of the Western Conference standings.
