Seven players from the University of New Mexico have been named to Phil Steele's 2025 Preseason Mountain West Team. This announcement comes as Jason Eck takes on his first year as head coach for the Lobos.
Scottre Humphrey, a running back, and Abraham Williams, a kick returner, were selected for the first team. Keagan Johnson, a wide receiver, and linebacker Jaxton Eck made it to the second team. Defensive end Keyshawn James-Newby was placed on the third team, while Israel Mukwiza and Tevin Shaw were included in the fourth team as offensive guard and tackle, respectively.
Humphrey is recognized for his impressive performance last season with 1,386 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. He also earned All-America honors during his sophomore year. Williams has been noted for his skills as a kick returner despite being sidelined by injury for most of 2024. His past achievements include five 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Johnson joined the Lobos after playing at Kansas State and Iowa. Last season he recorded several games with significant yardage gains. Linebacker Jaxton Eck had an outstanding season with Idaho in 2024, achieving FCS All-America honors.
James-Newby had a strong performance last season at Idaho with notable tackles and sacks statistics. Mukwiza completed his redshirt senior season without allowing any sacks in nine starts at Mercer. Shaw played briefly last season before an injury ended his participation early.
The Lobos are set to begin their 2025 season against Michigan on August 30th, followed by their home opener against Idaho State on September 6th.
