Attorney General Raúl Torrez, along with a coalition of 16 attorneys general, announced a federal court ruling that restores funding for medical and public health research grants previously terminated by the Trump Administration. The court determined that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) acted unlawfully in canceling these grants, which were crucial for addressing urgent health challenges.
"This ruling ensures that researchers can get back to work on the groundbreaking science that protects families, saves lives, and strengthens our public health system," said Attorney General Raúl Torrez. "These grants support life-saving research—everything from cancer treatment and chronic disease prevention to maternal health and mental health services."
The lawsuit was filed by the coalition on April 4, challenging the abrupt termination of biomedical research funding for projects nationwide. NIH had issued identical letters to grant recipients stating that their projects "no longer effectuated agency priorities," without providing substantive justification.
Judge William G. Young ruled the terminations unlawful and ordered funding to be fully restored. This decision allows affected research institutions to resume their work immediately. The court found NIH's actions procedurally improper and potentially harmful to ongoing studies aimed at improving public health outcomes.
Today's ruling safeguards millions of dollars awarded to top-tier research teams working on complex medical challenges. The coalition plans to file a proposed order with the court soon to ensure compliance and immediate reinstatement of the grants.
