Christopher C. Witt appointed to State Game Commission by Gov. Lujan Grisham

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed Christopher C. Witt, Ph.D., to the State Game Commission for District 5. Witt is a professor in the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico and serves as the Director of the Museum of Southwestern Biology.

Witt's research focuses on birds, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications to his name. His work includes studies on game species such as waterfowl and cranes. He is recognized internationally for his research on hummingbirds, featured in the PBS Nature documentary "Super Hummingbirds."

Currently, Witt is investigating PFAS contamination in game birds at Holloman Air Force Base and across New Mexico. This research aims to guide hunters on managing risks associated with consuming contaminated game. Additionally, he is studying the genetics of New Mexico Sandhill Cranes to enhance crane hunting management and leads research on the Greater Roadrunner, New Mexico’s state bird.

Witt earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Louisiana State University. Under his leadership, the Museum of Southwestern Biology has expanded significantly, now housing over 5 million specimens utilized in more than 400 publications each year.

A lifelong angler and hunter, Witt has been a resident of New Mexico since 2007. His term on the commission begins June 11 and will conclude in February 2026.
