The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has issued a warning about a series of scam text messages falsely claiming to be from the MVD or local government agencies. The MVD emphasizes that it does not contact customers via text, email, or phone call to issue threats or demand payment.

"Any such message is fraudulent, and New Mexicans are urged not to respond, click on links, or share any personal or financial information," the division said. These fraudulent messages are not from the MVD or any local governments in New Mexico.

Residents are advised against replying to these messages, using any links provided, or giving out personal information. Many of these scam texts originate from international phone numbers. "New Mexicans may report the email, text message, or phone number to your email or phone carrier and delete them," the statement continued.

In cases where a caller is threatening, individuals are encouraged to contact local law enforcement. The MVD clarified that it will only reach out to customers by mail on official letterhead and will always provide remedies and contact information for resolving issues.

"If you ever question a letter’s authenticity," the division advises contacting them through their website at https://www.mvd.newmexico.gov/ or by calling 1-888-683-4636.
