El Palacio magazine features top writers in summer 2025 issue

El Palacio magazine is set to showcase the work of prominent writers in its summer 2025 issue. The publication highlights the significance of art as a practice, livelihood, and a means of building relationships within oneself and the community, while celebrating New Mexico's unique history.

An event will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Salón Ortega in Albuquerque. The gathering will feature a reading panel and discussion on three articles from El Palacio’s summer issue. One article by Lazarus Letcher explores Cathay Williams’ decision to disguise herself as a man to join the Buffalo Soldiers in New Mexico in 1867. Another piece by RoseMary Diaz delves into the scientific and cultural knowledge of astronomy among Native people in North America. Additionally, Navajo Nation Poet Laureate Jake Skeets writes about artist Chris E. Vargas’s vision of museums as creative spaces.

The summer issue also includes contributions from NYT correspondent Simón Romero, who writes about his mother Janet Stein Romero; novelist Jamie Figueroa on Dr. Greg Cajete’s dedication to art making; poetry by former Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero; and an article by Gina Rae La Cerva on an Aboriginal Australian artist collective.

El Palacio was established in 1913 and is published quarterly for the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs by the Museum Resources Division in Santa Fe. It continues to cover art, culture, and history through exhibits, public programs, and scholarship across eight museums and state historic sites.
