New Mexico has been ranked last in the nation for child well-being, according to the latest Kids Count Data Book. The report evaluates 16 indicators across four areas: family and community, health, economic well-being, and education.
The state is positioned 50th overall in child well-being, education, and family and community categories. It ranks 49th in economic well-being and 46th in health. These figures highlight the ongoing challenges exacerbated by the pandemic up to 2023.
In terms of education, proficiency rates have declined with many fourth graders not reading at grade level and eighth graders facing difficulties in math. Despite these challenges, New Mexico has seen progress with more high school students graduating on time and a reduction in teenage employment.
