Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Smith retired today after 35 years of military service during a ceremony at the Regional Training Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Smith's final role was as the State Command Sergeant Major of the New Mexico National Guard.
Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Carper, Deputy Adjutant General and Land Component Commander of the NMNG, led the ceremony attended by family, friends, and both current and former Guard members. Carper expressed gratitude to attendees, stating, "Your taking time out of your day to honor Sergeant Major Smith is important." He emphasized that the event recognized both Smith's service and his family's support.
Carper highlighted the Army Core Values using the mnemonic LDRSHIP: Leadership, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. "Rich has applied that not only to his professional life but to his personal life," Carper noted. He praised Smith's dedication to state and nation: "His service – not only to our great state but to our great nation – has been nothing short of remarkable."
During the ceremony, Carper presented Smith with several honors including the Meritorious Service Medal and pending approval for the Legion of Merit. Additional recognitions included the New Mexico Distinguished Service Medal and a certificate from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Smith began his military career in 1989 with the Florida Army National Guard before transferring to New Mexico in 2004. His extensive career included roles such as Platoon Sergeant and Chief of Operations for various units within the Guard.
Smith expressed gratitude towards his family: "To my wife Stacey, 'thanks' isn’t enough for all you do for me and the girls." He also thanked colleagues who supported him throughout his career: "Thank you for your mentorship, support, and confidence in me."
Maj. Tabitha Gonzales was master of ceremonies while 1st Lt. Denise Garcia provided invocation and benediction.
