In New Mexico, the annual Kids Count report has once again placed the state at the bottom in terms of child well-being. The report, compiled by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and reported by New Mexico Voices for Children, shows a decline in seven measurable points with only four areas showing improvement.

Despite claims earlier this year from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and her allies about improvements in child poverty, the report indicates that 25% of New Mexico children were living in poverty in 2023, unchanged from 2019. Additionally, while student performance in math and reading has declined, graduation rates have risen, raising questions about their credibility.

New Mexico Voices for Children has been criticized for attempting to present the data as evidence of successful progressive policies. Critics argue that these policies have not succeeded and suggest that a shift towards free-market economic policies and educational choice could improve outcomes for children in New Mexico.
