Stefani Lord, a house representative from New Mexico, has raised concerns that Albuquerque law enforcement agencies are defying a presidential immigration order, potentially jeopardizing tens of millions in federal funds. The statement was made on the social media platform X.

"These agencies will NOT cooperate with ICE," said Lord, New Mexico State Representative for 22nd District (R). "The Executive Order directs federal agencies to enforce immigration law and withhold funding from non-compliant sanctuary jurisdictions. Albuquerque risks losing more than $68 million in federal funding. They are not complying with a directive from the President and Commander-in-Chief."

In April 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order targeting sanctuary jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. According to the Associated Press, the order directs the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to identify such jurisdictions and restrict their access to federal funds. Over 500 jurisdictions were listed, sparking backlash and legal challenges from local governments claiming inaccuracies and federal overreach. This move renews Trump's hardline immigration stance as he heads into the 2024 campaign cycle.

Albuquerque could lose as much as $68 million in federal funds under Trump's 2025 immigration executive order. KOAT News reports that the city is listed among jurisdictions deemed "noncompliant," putting essential programs and public safety funding at risk. The potential loss has fueled debate over local immigration policy, with city officials defending their stance as legally sound and community-focused.

Cooperation between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remains inconsistent across sanctuary jurisdictions, influencing federal funding levels. According to the Department of Homeland Security, cities that refuse ICE detainer requests or limit jail access may see reduced federal support. The policy is intended to pressure local agencies into compliance; however, opponents argue it undermines community trust and local autonomy.

Lord is a Republican representative serving New Mexico’s House District 22 since 2021. According to the New Mexico Legislature, she sits on committees related to public safety and health and is a vocal advocate for stronger immigration enforcement. She has opposed sanctuary policies and supports legislation increasing cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
