Leadership Albuquerque Class of 2025 completes program focused on civic leadership

Leadership Albuquerque's Class of 2025 concluded its 10-month program with a final day of activities at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center on May 19. The program, which has been running for over four decades, aims to develop civic leaders by providing professionals from various industries with insights into issues affecting economic growth and quality of life in Albuquerque and New Mexico.

The closing day began at the University of New Mexico Stadium, where David Campbell, Leadership Albuquerque chair, welcomed participants. Campbell highlighted the significance of tourism, culture, and sports in New Mexico's economic and social landscape. He noted that "many of our small and mid-sized communities thrive on tourism" and emphasized the role of college and professional sports as sources of community pride.

Participants heard from several speakers throughout the day, including Fernando Lovo, UNM vice president and director of Athletics; Monique Fragua, CEO and president of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center; Monique Jacobson, former Secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department; Tania Armenta, CEO and president of Visit Albuquerque; and Julie Morgas Baca, director of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Campbell introduced Lovo who discussed UNM Athletics' impact on community life. He also shared updates on coaching hires and facility developments supported by legislative funding. Participants toured the New Mexico Mutual Champions Training Center to learn about plans for renovating UNM Stadium.

Ron Patel, president of New Mexico United soccer team, addressed attendees about fostering community through sports. Fragua spoke about Native American culture's importance to state history during a tour at IPCC museum. Jacobson reflected on creating the successful "New Mexico True" marketing campaign over a decade ago. Armenta presented tourism as an economic driver in New Mexico.

Julie Morgas Baca concluded discussions with insights into the Balloon Fiesta's history and impact. Campbell commended participants for their dedication: “Our goal has been to help you develop knowledge necessary to become engaged civic leaders."

A graduation ceremony featured Lawrence Rael as keynote speaker while recognizing class members from diverse organizations like Girl Scouts NM Trails & Sandia National Laboratories among others involved this year’s cohort alongside supporting sponsors such as PNM led by Don Tarry or Bohannan Huston managed by Bruce Stidworthy etcetera.
