The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce has commended Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) for its recent advancements in student success. On May 25, Chamber President and CEO Terri Cole, Board Chair Del Esparza, and Education Bold Issue Group Chair Del Archuleta published a guest column in the Albuquerque Journal highlighting these achievements.
The Chamber acknowledged its long-standing relationship with APS, which has seen both successes and challenges. The leaders expressed enthusiasm about APS's new strategic plan, the first in over a decade. This plan outlines clear goals aimed at improving student outcomes across the district.
In their advocacy efforts, the Chamber hosted Dr. Carey Wright on May 7. Dr. Wright is known for her role in the "Mississippi Miracle" and currently serves as Maryland's superintendent of schools. She emphasized that improving student outcomes requires changes in adult behaviors, stating, “It’s not something that happens overnight. It’s something that happens over time.”
The column also underscored the Chamber's commitment to enhancing student achievement, particularly in math and reading. The organization played a role in passing a new law focused on the science of reading and aims to support struggling students and their families.
“We will continue to push hard for better outcomes,” the column stated. “But we’ll also celebrate progress when we see it.” The Chamber sees APS beginning a journey of improvement and encourages support for this endeavor while holding all parties accountable.
