Walter Cathey, Regional Chief Executive of Covenant Health, said in a press release that the organization is committed to expanding access to life-changing care through community partnerships.
"We are honored to serve our communities and deeply grateful for the partnerships that help us expand access to life-changing care," said Cathey. "Supporting recovery, improving health outcomes, and building a healthier future for all."
According to the press release, in 2024, Covenant Health invested over $81 million to advance community health across West Texas and eastern New Mexico. The focus was on serving poor and vulnerable populations. As per its Annual Report to Our Communities, the health system allocated $50.6 million to free and discounted care for the uninsured, $13.9 million to cover unpaid Medicaid costs, $11 million to health professions education and research, $5.6 million to community health partnerships, and $319,000 to subsidized health services. This investment underscores Covenant Health’s commitment to reducing disparities and expanding access to care through targeted funding and strategic outreach.
According to the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Congress, Covenant Health has implemented several initiatives to enhance healthcare accessibility. Notably, the organization led the creation of the first COVID-19 Infusion Tent in Texas and partnered with the Texas Department of Emergency Medicine to open a COVID-only hospital. These efforts were instrumental in managing the pandemic and ensuring continued care for non-COVID patients.
Providence reports that Covenant Health's Community Health Needs Assessment identified key areas of focus: dental care for the uninsured, mental health and counseling services, health education, women's health, and addressing social determinants of health such as food insecurity and housing instability. These priorities guide the organization's outreach programs and partnerships.
Cathey serves as the Regional Chief Executive of Covenant Health, overseeing operations in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. He has been instrumental in expanding healthcare services in the region, including acquiring Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital and establishing emergency healthcare facilities.
