The New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) has released legislator scores for the 2025 session, evaluating lawmakers based on business-related priorities set at the session's outset.

According to NMBC, legislators were provided with a set of priorities focused on issues impacting the state's business climate, including taxes, regulations, public safety, and workforce education. These priorities formed the basis for assessing lawmakers' votes as detailed in NMBC's policy positions and legislative scorecards.

"We applaud the effort of those legislators who set party politics aside to do what is right for the people of New Mexico," said Carla Sonntag, president and CEO. "We’re thankful that at a time of unprecedented attacks against New Mexico values, much of that was stopped by those who put New Mexicans ahead of partisan priorities."

During the session, several bills were introduced that NMBC considered potentially harmful to businesses. These included proposals for new taxes and measures affecting employment relations and the oil and gas sector, which funds a significant portion of the state budget. Many such bills did not pass. The coalition also expressed concerns about rising crime rates in Albuquerque and noted a lack of legislative progress on bail reform and stricter criminal laws. Sonntag mentioned the governor's plans for a special session on crime.

Referring to HB 11, formerly known as the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act, Sonntag said it was "a sad day in New Mexico when a legislative body would be so irresponsible as to pass a tax on employees and employers" despite known insolvency issues. She said that "New Mexicans should not be taxed on a program that will fail financially."

The NMBC is an organization advocating for business owners' interests with government officials. It provides voter education on issues and policies while aiming to unite New Mexicans through resources and calls to action.
