The New Mexico State National Civics Bee Championship is set to take place on June 7 at the University of New Mexico SUB Ballroom A, from noon to 3 p.m. This event is part of a nationwide civics knowledge competition for middle school students in grades six through eight. The aim of the National Civics Bee is to educate both participants and their audience about democracy and citizen responsibilities.
The Daniels Fund has joined forces with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to address the concerning lack of civics knowledge among American youth through this initiative. Since its inception three years ago in five cities, the National Civics Bee has expanded significantly, now reaching 200 cities across 40 states.
Finalists for the New Mexico State Finals include Keith Lee and Sheryl Lee from Albuquerque Academy MS in Albuquerque, Victoria Miller from Koogler MS in Aztec, Anaya Faruk from Salam Academy in Albuquerque, Izabella Baker from Rio Grande Academy of Fine Arts in Albuquerque, Alyssa Rocha Houston and Ben Tran from Houston MS in Hobbs, Miriam Yehl from Intermediate Prep Academy at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, and Samara Gonzales and Sasha Jimenez from Carlsbad Preparatory Academy in Carlsbad.
The Daniels Fund was established 25 years ago to realize Bill Daniels' vision of positively impacting American life. Over this period, it has provided over $1.2 billion in grants to nearly 6,000 nonprofit partners and higher education scholarships to more than 5,400 students. The fund continues its mission by partnering with effective nonprofits that are transforming communities.
