OPINION: The Truth Is Out: The Abortion Pill Is Harming Women

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

For years, women have been told that the abortion pill is safe, simple, and private. That narrative—crafted by the abortion industry, echoed by media outlets, and rubber-stamped by federal agencies—has shaped how an entire generation thinks about abortion. But this week, a bombshell report shattered that illusion and exposed what pro-life advocates and many women have known all along: this pill isn’t safe, and women are paying the price.

According to new data from the Ethics and Public Policy Center, 1 in 10 chemical abortions results in serious health complications. These aren’t mild side effects—they’re traumatic medical emergencies. Sepsis, hemorrhaging, emergency surgeries, and hospitalizations are far more common than the FDA has admitted. In fact, the study shows the actual rate of harm is 22 times higher than the FDA previously reported.

This isn’t just a public health oversight—it’s a public betrayal.

The abortion industry knew. The FDA knew. And for decades, they buried the truth under political pressure, ideological agendas, and profit motives. They told women what they wanted them to believe, not what they deserved to know.

Meanwhile, policy changes under the Biden administration have allowed these pills to be shipped directly to women through the mail—no in-person exam, no medical supervision, and no real safeguards. Women are left to face this alone, often in fear, pain, or confusion, without even a clear understanding of what’s happening to their bodies.

That’s not freedom. That’s abandonment.

Here in New Mexico, we see how aggressively abortion is being promoted, while any mention of the risks is ignored or dismissed. But real choice requires real information. When women are misled, they are not choosing—they are being manipulated.

At New Mexico Family Action Movement, we believe that protecting life begins with protecting truth. It means defending the dignity of both the unborn child and the woman carrying that child. Women deserve medical care rooted in science, compassion, and honesty—not political ideology.

We cannot let this report be ignored. Congress must investigate how this drug was approved and why red flags were overlooked. The distribution of mifepristone should be suspended until its safety can be thoroughly and independently verified. State lawmakers, attorney generals, and medical boards should act swiftly to demand accountability and protect women from further harm.

But beyond policy, this is a moral crisis. We must care enough about women to tell them the truth—even when it’s unpopular. We must walk with those who are hurting, provide life-affirming alternatives, and build a culture where women are never forced to choose between their wellbeing and their child’s life.

The FDA failed. The abortion industry lied. And women have been left to suffer the consequences.

Now it’s time for truth-tellers to rise.

Let’s be bold. Let’s be clear. And above all, let’s be compassionate—because women deserve better than this broken system. They deserve the truth. And they deserve a community willing to stand with them.
