On April 16, the United Kingdom’s (UK) Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling that should resonate across the Atlantic — especially here in New Mexico. The court affirmed that under the UK’s Equality Act of 2010, the term “woman” refers solely to those who are biologically female. At a time when the very meaning of sex and womanhood is being debated in legislatures, classrooms, and courtrooms across America, this ruling offers a moment of clarity.
The case stemmed from an effort by Scottish authorities to redefine “woman” for the purpose of meeting gender quotas on public boards — a move that would have allowed men who identify as women to be counted as female if they held a Gender Recognition Certificate. But the UK Supreme Court stood firm, ruling that legal redefinitions must not erase biological reality.
This matters deeply — not just for women in the UK, but for women in the United States and right here in New Mexico. As public policy increasingly bends toward ideological trends, we are losing sight of the practical and moral importance of maintaining sex-based distinctions. Whether it’s in women’s sports, domestic violence shelters, or health care policies, conflating gender identity with biological sex has real-world consequences — often at the expense of women and girls.
New Mexico is no stranger to these debates. As the state addresses critical issues like child welfare, public safety, and access to health care, policymakers are also being asked to consider how to define — and protect — womanhood. That’s why the UK’s decision is more than symbolic. It affirms that biology matters. It says that rights based on sex must actually be based on sex — not subjective identity.
At Concerned Women for America of New Mexico, we believe this is not just common sense — it’s Biblical truth. As Psalm 139:14 declares, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” We are created with intention, and our sex is part of that design. That reality deserves legal recognition and protection.
The UK Supreme Court got it right. Now it’s time for American leaders — especially in states like New Mexico — to do the same. Let’s protect the integrity of women’s rights by standing firm on the foundation of biological truth.
