The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) has announced the launch of the "Matriarchs of New Mexico Agriculture" campaign. This initiative aims to honor women who have significantly contributed to the state's agricultural community. Nominations for the 2026 class are currently being accepted, with a deadline set for Friday, June 21, at midnight.
The program seeks to recognize women who have dedicated their lives to advancing agriculture in New Mexico through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. The term "matriarch" is defined as a "head of family or tribe" or "an older woman who is powerful within a family or organization," and NMDA aims to acknowledge those embodying these ideals.
Jeff Witte, New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture, stated: “With 2025 as the inaugural year for this campaign, NMDA has selected two legendary women to kick off the campaign and inspire future nominations.” He added that these honorees were pivotal in envisioning the campaign and have been strong advocates for both the agriculture industry and NMDA's initiatives. They will receive formal recognition in September.
Promotional advertisements for television and online platforms are scheduled to begin in January 2026. These efforts coincide with international initiatives by the United Nations to highlight women's crucial role in global food security.
The campaign invites nominations from across New Mexico and accepts submissions for both living individuals and posthumous candidates. Further information, including a nomination form and official campaign logo, can be found on their website.
