Today, Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM) Action Fund announced its endorsement of U.S. Secretary Deb Haaland for Governor in the 2026 election cycle. This endorsement followed a detailed evaluation process of candidates running for governor.

Deb Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo and representing 35 generations of New Mexicans, holds distinctions as the first Native American woman to lead a State Party and serve in a U.S. Congress and the White House cabinet. Her service as Secretary of the Department of the Interior under the Biden-Harris administration is noteworthy. During her tenure in Congress, she achieved a 98% lifetime score on the League of Conservation Voters’ Scorecard.

"Secretary Haaland’s record of public service and dedication to the people speaks for itself," stated Demis Foster, CEO of CVNM. He highlighted her advocacy for public lands, clean water, and addressing climate change. Foster emphasized the importance of electing a governor committed to these causes, stating, "With Haaland at the helm, we know that real and meaningful change will happen and will benefit hardworking families."

Under the Lujan Grisham Administration in New Mexico, progress has been made regarding climate, water, and wildlife protection. This includes the passage of legislation like the Energy Transition Act of 2019 and investments in climate projects totaling over $400 million. However, other states have advanced further in recent years, indicating a need for renewed climate-focused leadership at the state level.

Molly Taylor, CVNM's CEO, noted the significance of the upcoming election against the backdrop of economic challenges and environmental policy threats. "State and local leaders can and should lead the way to protect our communities," she stated. Taylor expressed confidence in Haaland's leadership and commitment to protecting natural resources and community well-being.

In support of the endorsement, the CVNM Action Fund launched the Green Gov 2026 website. The site serves as a platform to highlight Haaland's environmental initiatives and to inform voters about her priorities and achievements.

Conservation Voters New Mexico Action Fund, associated with Conservation Voters New Mexico, works to elect candidates at the state level who support conservation efforts. Their mission is to make voters aware of the impact their choices have on New Mexico's environment and communities.
