Sherman McCorkle Legislative Session and Local Government Advocacy Chair Sandia Science and Technology Park | Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce
New Mexico Oil and Gas Association CEO Missi Currier recently addressed members of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, highlighting the far-reaching impact of the oil and gas sector. Currier, speaking on April 24, emphasized the industry's integration into everyday life and its economic benefits.
Currier outlined the three main divisions within the industry: upstream, midstream, and downstream. Each segment plays a role in producing a wide range of products, including vehicles, construction materials, fuels, household goods, electronics, and toys.
Significantly, Currier shared that oil and gas contribute substantial funds to state revenue, citing Bernalillo County's $13 billion contribution in 2024. These funds support infrastructure, education, and capital projects. "The funds went to infrastructure, education, capital outlay projects and higher education," Currier stated. Despite the financial contribution, Currier noted that over 25 legislative bills were introduced that could have impacted the industry. NMOGA responded with six campaigns, resulting in four bills passing with industry-friendly amendments.
Currier stressed the importance of industry growth, noting innovations for cleaner operations. She shared that New Mexico ranks as the second-largest oil producer and the fifth-largest natural gas producer in the U.S. Additionally, $7.4 billion from the industry's $13.26 billion annual revenue supports the state's general fund.
