Albuquerque renovation costs criticized for design changes

The City of Albuquerque's ongoing renovation of its old City Hall has sparked concerns over reported waste of taxpayer money. The City’s Inspector General has highlighted that the city has spent thousands of Albuquerque taxpayer dollars on the nearly three-year renovation project. According to the Inspector General, the city initially paid for a design that has been modified twice, with a potential third change pending approval. "If the city approves that third plan," the Inspector General stated, "the design process will have cost Albuquerque at least $55,000."

In response, Mayor Tim Keller's administration challenged the Inspector General's report. Keller’s administration released a statement asserting, "This Inspector General lost credibility long ago, having been repeatedly cited by her own independent oversight board for misrepresentation without legal basis, lack of peer review, investigation standard violations, and clear bias—reducing her role to little more than that of an opinion writer."

Paul Gessing, president of the Rio Grande Foundation (RGF), commented on the situation for KRQE Channel 13. Meanwhile, the administration’s statement has led to assertions about the management of the city, with critics suggesting that its current handling reflects mismanagement and failures.
