During the week of April 21-25, New Mexico honors the volunteers who aid older adults and adults with disabilities throughout the state. These volunteers are vital to the functioning of state programs by providing essential services such as meal delivery, companionship, and advocacy for those in long-term care. Over the last fiscal year, 1,979 volunteers collectively contributed more than 630,000 service hours through various programs, including the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Companion Program, and Foster Grandparents Program.

"Volunteers are essential to our mission of ensuring the dignity, independence and safety of New Mexico’s aging and disabled populations," stated Sec. Emily Kaltenbach from the Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD). "Their generosity, advocacy, and kindness are powerful forces that strengthen our communities every day. This week and every week, we are grateful to all of our volunteers who provide joy, care and support into the lives of our elders."
