Every January, the New Mexico State Capitol, known as the Roundhouse, becomes a hub of legislative activity, with advocates and lawmakers gathering to influence the state's future. This year, Equality New Mexico launched a new initiative during the legislative session by introducing three new LGBTQ advocates: Chiara, Yza, and Arlo, as part of their 2025 Legislative Fellowship program.
The three fellows joined Equality New Mexico in Santa Fe, actively participating in advocacy work for 10 weeks. They attended committee hearings and interacted with lawmakers, gaining firsthand insight into the policy-making process.
Chiara, a graduate student, was inspired to participate after hearing from EQNM’s Political Director Marshall Martinez in a policy class. "I’m working toward a master’s and likely a doctorate," Chiara stated, emphasizing the importance of practical experience over theoretical learning in her education.
Yza, who had paused their college education, saw the fellowship as a unique opportunity to explore their political interests. "I always had a deep interest in politics, but I didn’t think I’d ever have the chance to learn like this," Yza explained.
Arlo applied to the program to understand how LGBTQ rights are shaped at the state level. "I thought I understood the process before, but I didn’t know what I didn’t know," Arlo said.
The fellows found that being present in the legislative environment was educational in ways that surpassed classroom learning. "Being at the Roundhouse every day opens so many doors," Yza noted, recognizing the importance of building connections in advocacy work.
Chiara appreciated observing the work of other advocacy groups, such as Bold Futures. "They were so generous with their time, explaining the process," Chiara said, valuing the insights gained.
Arlo also reflected on the importance of resilience, noting the repeated efforts of groups like Bold Futures and the ACLU during challenging times. "Their resilience was inspiring," Arlo said.
All three fellows agreed that the hands-on experience was transformative. "So much of what I’d learned before was theoretical," Chiara mentioned, emphasizing how real-world application completed their understanding.
For Yza, the financial support during the fellowship made it possible to fully engage without personal financial stress. "Most people don’t realize how rare that is," Yza said about the opportunity the fellowship provided.
Each fellow found personal growth through the experience, gaining new skills and deepening their commitment to advocacy.
EQNM plans to continue the fellowship in future legislative sessions and encourages interested individuals to stay informed through their announcements.
Arlo and Yza offered advice to future fellows. Arlo advised not to be discouraged by initial quietness, while Yza emphasized the importance of listening and participating with kindness.
The fellowship aims to prepare LGBTQ leaders with the skills and support needed for effective advocacy. EQNM focuses on empowering individuals who can contribute to structural changes in their careers and communities.
