Rebecca Dow, a state representative for New Mexico District 38, said congressional Democrats wasted time during the legislative session and failed to implement meaningful legislation. She made these remarks in a post on X on April 8.
"Too bad we don't have a legislative session so we can implement criminal justice reform," said Dow. "Wait…. Dems just wasted our time during a 60 day session and failed to implement criminal justice reforms."
Dow shared a post from the New Mexico House Republicans account that highlighted a state of emergency declaration. The post said, "Democrats said crime in Albuquerque was down. Now a state of emergency has been declared, and the National Guard is being activated… makes sense."

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham authorized the New Mexico National Guard to assist the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), according to an announcement from her office on April 8. Between 60 and 70 National Guard personnel are set to be deployed to Albuquerque in mid-May. "By deploying our National Guard to support APD with essential duties, we’re ensuring that trained police officers can focus on what they do best – keeping our communities safe," said Lujan Grisham. She added that this partnership represents their commitment to addressing the fentanyl crisis and juvenile crime with every resource available.
Albuquerque Police Chief Harold J. Medina requested assistance from the National Guard along the Central Avenue corridor in a letter dated March 31 to Governor Lujan Grisham. Medina's letter noted progress in reducing shootings and aggravated assaults but emphasized the need for every sworn officer to be actively engaged in law enforcement activities such as making arrests and deterring potential offenders. He outlined several critical areas where the National Guard could provide support, including scene security, traffic control at critical incidents, prisoner transport, aviation, transit security, and Metro court security.
