Crystal Brantley, a State Senator representing New Mexico's District 35, said that the recent shooting at a Las Cruces park represents a failure by the government to ensure public safety. Brantley made this statement in a press release on March 22.
"Last night, I sat on the floor of the Senate while texts and calls from all over the district," said Brantley, New Mexico State Senator. "There is no feeling like the helplessness you experience, even from the center of the Capitol building, when a tragedy like this strikes. I am praying for all the families afflicted by last night's tragedy and stand ready to help in any way I can."
The shooting occurred on March 21, 2025, at Young Park in Las Cruces during an unsanctioned car show that attracted approximately 200 people. Multiple individuals opened fire during the event, resulting in three fatalities and leaving 15 others injured. The victims were aged between 16 and 36. Witnesses described a rapid escalation with shots fired from multiple directions. Law enforcement officials characterized the incident as a targeted act of violence stemming from a dispute at the event, according to AP News.
People Magazine reported that authorities arrested four individuals in response to the shooting: Tomas Rivas, aged 20, and three teenagers aged between 15 and 17. All suspects have been charged with three counts of murder, with additional charges pending.
Investigators recovered ballistic evidence from the scene of the Las Cruces shooting, including between 50 and 60 spent shell casings from handgun-caliber firearms. Forensic teams are analyzing the casings to determine the number and type of weapons used, which officials believe indicate multiple shooters. The area surrounding Young Park has been closed for public safety as the investigation continues, as per AP News.
According to her website, Brantley is the first woman and Republican to represent New Mexico’s Senate District 35. She is a Las Cruces native, an NMSU graduate, and a rural advocate who serves on the Senate Finance Committee with a focus on agriculture, law enforcement, and small business support.
