Jim Townsend, the State Senator for New Mexico District 34, expressed concerns about the impact of current policies on residents of New Mexico. "Failed policies are hurting all New Mexicans and the people of the state deserve better from their legislators," Townsend said in a post on X dated March 27.

"New Mexico just keeps setting records of failures," said Townsend. "The failed policies of progressive democrats just keeps hurting all New Mexican's. We can do much better and the people of New Mexico deserve much better."

According to Townsend, he shared a graphic that highlighted New Mexico's rankings in various categories, including overall return on investment (ROI), taxes per capita for taxpayers over the age of 18, education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure. The data showed that New Mexico ranks last among all states overall. Specifically, it ranks 50th for safety, 49th for education, and 48th for total taxes per capita. Additionally, the state ranks 34th in infrastructure, 42nd in health, and 45th for the economy.

WalletHub conducted an analysis to determine the best and worst ROI across all states by evaluating five categories divided into 29 metrics. The Overall Government Services Score was calculated by determining each state's weighted average across these metrics. WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo explained that there is a tradeoff between tax collection and government returns. Lupo said that states with the best taxpayer ROI typically do not charge income tax, resulting in lower taxes but still providing good-quality government services.
