OPINION: Another $10 million abortion clinic? It’s beginning to feel like Groundhog Day in New Mexico!

Here we go again—another taxpayer-funded abortion facility pushed through without transparency or public input!

In yet another last-minute political maneuver, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham quietly slipped an additional $10 million into the 2025 state capital outlay budget to fund an abortion facility in Northern New Mexico. This follows the $10 million she already allocated in 2022 for a similar facility in Las Cruces, reinforcing her commitment to expanding abortion access at the expense of New Mexico taxpayers.

This move wasn’t debated openly. Instead, it was buried in House Bill 450 at the eleventh hour, ensuring that New Mexicans had no opportunity for public input or discussion. Despite strong opposition, both House and Senate Democrats forced the funding through on a strict party-line vote, demonstrating once again that partisan politics trumped fiscal responsibility and the will of the people.

Let’s be clear: New Mexico already has some of the most extreme abortion laws in the country, allowing abortion up until the moment of birth with virtually no restrictions. Unlike other states that have common-sense protections, New Mexico is rapidly becoming the abortion capital of the Southwest, with out-of-state residents flooding in for procedures that are illegal in their home states.

Now, with abortion facilities secured in both Northern and Southern New Mexico, the pattern is clear: how long before Gov. Lujan Grisham ensures these centers appear in the East and West as well? Is the goal to make New Mexico a regional hub for late-term abortion tourism—all funded by our taxpayer dollars?

At a time when New Mexico ranks among the worst in education, crime, and child welfare, why is $20 million being funneled into abortion centers instead of being invested in improving schools, supporting law enforcement, or helping struggling families? Shouldn’t our leaders be focused on building a better future for New Mexico’s children, rather than ensuring fewer of them make it into the world at all?

New Mexicans deserve better. It’s time to demand accountability and fiscal responsibility before more of our tax dollars disappear into this radical agenda. When are New Mexico voters finally going to say enough is enough?
