New Mexico's legislative body has passed a bill, SB 376, aimed at reducing health care costs for state employees. The bill is now awaiting the governor's approval. If signed into law, it will increase the state's contribution to employee health insurance premiums and eliminate the budget shortfall of the state health benefits program.

Kari Armijo, secretary of the New Mexico Health Care Authority, stated, “This bill will make a real difference for New Mexico’s state employees.” She emphasized that this legislation demonstrates effective policy-making by reducing health insurance costs and ensuring long-term stability in the system.

Currently, New Mexico ranks lowest in state contributions to employee health care premiums nationwide, covering only 65% of costs. The new bill addresses this issue by increasing contributions and providing premium assistance for eligible National Guard members to improve their access to affordable coverage.

The bill passed with strong bipartisan support: 36-2 in the Senate and 52-13 in the House. Sen. George Muñoz, one of the sponsors, remarked, “This bill puts money back in the pockets of state employees while fixing a long-standing budget shortfall.” Sen. Liz Stefanics added that it is beneficial for working families and strengthens New Mexico’s future.

The New Mexico Health Care Authority expressed gratitude to all involved in advancing this legislation. They highlighted its importance in enhancing health care coverage affordability for state workers.
