The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) recently participated in the 19th Annual Government-to-Government Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation. The event was an opportunity for tribal leaders to directly influence federal responses to violence affecting their communities.
Governor Roybal of Pueblo of Pojoaque emphasized her responsibility as the only female tribal Governor in New Mexico, stating, "It is my responsibility to ensure that the voices of Native women are heard and prioritized." She highlighted the importance of the consultation in addressing issues such as domestic violence, sex trafficking, and mental health crises. Roybal expressed hope for a future where "Native women are safe" and where traditional healing practices are integrated into existing systems.
Governor Chavarria of Santa Clara Pueblo noted the significant challenges faced by Native communities, including threats to physical safety and mental well-being starting from early stages. He pointed out jurisdictional barriers that complicate access to public safety services on tribal lands. "Additional resources and targeted political actions are urgently needed," he stated.
Tiffany Jiron, Executive Director of CSVANW, stressed the importance of tribal leaders' involvement in shaping federal responses. "Tribal leaders are in the best position to express the unique challenges their communities face," she said. CSVANW aims to ensure these experiences and priorities are considered at a federal level.
The consultation serves as a platform for leaders like Governors Chavarria and Roybal, along with Lieutenant Governor Abeita, to share insights on improving federal programs for their communities' needs. They plan to highlight successful initiatives within Isleta Pueblo, Santa Clara Pueblo, and Pojoaque Pueblo.
CSVANW advocates for ongoing dialogue between Tribal leaders and the federal government to strengthen partnerships and address systemic issues contributing to violence in Native communities. This effort aligns with ensuring federal trust responsibilities toward Native Americans across Turtle Island.
