A gathering titled "ReMatriation: Return to the Land, Return to Ourselves" is set to take place on February 8, 2025, at the NM State Capitol Roundhouse Rotunda in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The event will run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is organized in observance of Indigenous Women’s Day.
The agenda includes an Indigenous Prayer Walk from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by an opening prayer led by Saya’in of Tewa Women United. Governor Jenelle Roybal and the Mescalero President will deliver a welcome address between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM. Presentations on climate change and fire by Dr. Phobe Suina of Cochiti Pueblo, Youth MCs, and local youth are scheduled for 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM. Local dancers will perform from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with a call to action and closing remarks concluding the event from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
The ReMatriation event aims to provide communities with a platform to reflect on environmental justice issues affecting Native lands and families while honoring the roles Native women play within their communities. It also seeks solidarity for Native women, LGBTQ2S+ relatives, and families impacted by violence, climate change effects, and cultural disruption.
"This event matters because it highlights issues such as gender-based violence, human trafficking, and reproductive justice," organizers stated. They emphasized the need for legislative and societal changes.
