New Mexico State Representative Nicole Chavez has criticized the state's new stipend program for violent offenders, describing it as "a slap in the face to victims." Chavez expressed her concerns in a press release issued on March 10.

"The Democrat's crime package was just a start to addressing New Mexico's crime crisis," said Chavez. "My son's murderer, who got a slap on the wrist with a one-year sentence. It's a shame to be here after 10 years of advocacy and get nothing but excuses."

According to the New Mexico Higher Education Department, the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) has approved the University of New Mexico's Valencia campus to serve as a Prison Education Program (PEP) institution. This initiative allows incarcerated individuals to access federal funds, such as Pell Grants, to further their education. The goal is to enhance rehabilitation and reduce recidivism.

Research by the RAND Corporation suggests that participation in prison education programs reduces recidivism rates and increases employment prospects for formerly incarcerated individuals. This highlights the potential benefits of educational initiatives within correctional facilities, according to the NM Higher Education Department.

Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) offers support programs for system-impacted individuals, including those affected by the criminal justice system. The Formerly Incarcerated Reintegration Students' Success Team (FIRST) assists these students in navigating educational opportunities, financial aid, and balancing life commitments. The aim is to facilitate successful reintegration into society.

Chavez, a Republican candidate for House District 31, is known as a victims' rights advocate and healthcare leader. After losing her son to violence, she founded Robbed New Mexico to advocate for tougher crime laws. With experience in legislation, business, and public safety, she is dedicated to justice, education, and economic development.
