On Monday night, the Albuquerque City Council adopted a new Nuisance Abatement Ordinance aimed at improving community welfare and safety. The ordinance was introduced by District 9 City Councilor Renée Grout at the request of the administration. It replaces the previous nuisance ordinance, offering clearer definitions of public nuisances and streamlining enforcement processes.

“Dilapidated and dangerous properties adversely impact neighborhoods all over our city,” said Grout. “I appreciate the administration bringing this bill to streamline action against derelict property owners and incentivize people to take care of their properties. This bill sets a strong foundation for a safer, healthier and more secure community.”

The ordinance introduces several key changes:

- Overhauls Nuisance Abatement Framework: Sets clearer standards for addressing nuisances that affect health, welfare, or safety.

- Expands Civil Abatement Tools: Introduces civil fines, administrative procedures for abatement, and allows civil actions for relief.

- Emergency Abatement Protocol: Allows immediate action in hazardous situations to ensure community safety.

- Drug Laboratory Site Remediation: Mandates remediation of contaminated sites from clandestine drug laboratories.

These measures are intended to protect the public and provide remedies for property owners.
