NM FAM announces the Detransitioner Protection Act

The New Mexico Family Action Movement (NM FAM) has announced the introduction of SB500, known as the Detransitioner Protection Act. This legislative proposal aims to safeguard minors from irreversible medical procedures related to gender transition, uphold parental rights, and support individuals who regret undergoing gender transition treatments. The announcement was made in a press release on February 27.

According to NM FAM, SB500 is sponsored by Senator Jay Block and Representative David Gallegos. The bill seeks to emphasize informed decision-making and parental involvement in healthcare decisions concerning minors.

The legislation prohibits healthcare providers or public bodies from offering gender transition procedures or related information to minors. It requires that providers deliver informed notice to the minor or their parents, detailing critical aspects such as the absence of reliable studies indicating these treatments reduce suicide risk, the off-label use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, and potential risks like sterilization, bone density loss, and unknown effects on brain development. Furthermore, the bill stipulates that gender transition procedures should be accompanied by detransition procedures, mandates reporting on detransition claims, and outlines civil actions and penalties for violations.

"Parents know their children best, and they should never be left out of decisions that impact their future," said Jodi Hendricks, executive director of NM FAM. "SB500 guarantees that families remain at the center of medical care, ensuring that no child is rushed into irreversible procedures without proper safeguards. This legislation is not about limiting choice—it’s about ensuring that young people have the time, support, and knowledge they need before making decisions that will affect them for a lifetime. SB500 protects children, empowers parents, and provides a safety net for those who need help reclaiming their biological identity."

The New Mexico Family Action Movement focuses on promoting values such as religious freedom, family strength, and life protection within New Mexico. Their mission includes safeguarding life from conception to natural death, supporting the family unit, and defending religious freedoms.
