Davin Lopez, President and CEO of the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance (MVEDA), said that the $5 billion BorderPlex Digital Infrastructure Campus investment marks a significant advancement for Santa Teresa. This announcement was made in a press release on February 25.
"Investment in critical infrastructure, new job opportunities, and solutions for clean water and reliable power have been at the top of our list," said Lopez. "It's precisely the type of development we've been working to attract. One that leverages innovation to strengthen our position as a key player in global trade."
According to the press release, the BorderPlex Digital Infrastructure Campus will incorporate advanced power, water, and fiber infrastructure to support global trade and high-tech industries, creating 1,000 jobs. In addition to economic growth, BorderPlex Digital is collaborating with Doña Ana Community College (DACC) and New Mexico State University (NMSU) to enhance academic programs in water management, technical training, and artificial intelligence. These partnerships align with New Mexico’s Energy Transition Act, ensuring sustainable and community-driven development.
The Santa Teresa Port of Entry, established in 1993, has developed into a crucial commercial hub, facilitating over $31 billion in trade annually. Its economic impact includes a $2 billion contribution to New Mexico’s economy and supports thousands of jobs. Expansion plans aim to increase commercial and private lanes, strengthening the region’s trade infrastructure, according to NM BorderPlex.
The Wilmington Trust reports that the United States leads in digital infrastructure expansion with 5,400 data centers—the highest globally. In 2023, the U.S. data center market grew by 26%, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and e-commerce. Hyperscale providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Google invested $166 billion in infrastructure, fueling long-term growth.
