A Mexican national, arrested for illegal re-entry into the United States, was charged by the U.S. Attorney’s office after attempting to bribe a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent. This information came from a February 13 post on X.
According to the post, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albuquerque identified the Mexican national as Samuel Mendoza-Torres. He was taken into custody on February 8, 2025, alongside another individual near the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station. During transport, Mendoza-Torres offered $400 to secure his release. In an interview following his arrest, he admitted to escorting illegal immigrants into the U.S. and acknowledged that offering money to a CBP agent was illegal. Mendoza-Torres faces up to 20 years in prison and will remain in custody until his trial.
The Santa Teresa CBP station, established in December 1995, is responsible for line watch duties and patrolling the open desert, according to a CBP website dedicated to the station.

The U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector oversees about 268 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, spanning West Texas and New Mexico. The New Mexico portion includes operations in the Lordsburg, Deming, and Santa Teresa stations. Agents patrol a combination of urban areas, desert terrain, and mountainous regions to monitor and secure the border. The El Paso Sector in New Mexico is responsible for processing individuals encountered along the border, working in collaboration with state and local law enforcement for security operations. The sector also uses surveillance and technology to detect unauthorized crossings and other border activities.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security, responsible for safeguarding the nation's borders and preventing the illegal entry of people and contraband. Established in 1924, CBP operates at 328 ports of entry and protects 7,000 miles of land borders and 95,000 miles of maritime borders.
