A research project in New Mexico has revealed encouraging support for transgender rights, particularly in rural communities. This initiative was a collaborative effort involving the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, Bold Futures, ProgressNow, and Strong Families. The study aimed to assess the attitudes of New Mexicans towards trans rights.

The findings indicate that many residents value fairness and equality for their transgender neighbors. The research included a digital survey of over 100 people with trans family members and 11 focus groups across various regions, as well as a statewide survey with 1,500 participants balanced for age, geography, and demographics.

Contrary to the assumption that rural communities hold more conservative views against trans inclusion, the results show these communities also care about fairness and dignity. "The key is making sure people hear about what connects trans rights to the values they already hold," stated the researchers.

Data from the study highlighted that 65% of respondents believe decisions about trans youth should be made without political interference. Additionally, over one-third oppose laws restricting trans people from using bathrooms aligning with their gender identity. However, just over half support restricting trans athletes based on sex assigned at birth, indicating a need for further education on this issue.

The research also emphasized the role of trusted messengers in changing attitudes. Effective communicators include trans individuals sharing their stories, LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, medical professionals, faith leaders who align acceptance with spiritual values, and family members of trans people.

Organizations such as EQNM are offering advocacy training to facilitate effective conversations on trans issues. Community involvement is encouraged by connecting with organizations like TGRCNM and joining mailing lists for updates on legislative efforts.

Despite national hostility towards transgender individuals, New Mexico shows a different narrative where diverse identities coexist harmoniously. However, misinformation still poses challenges. The call to action urges New Mexicans to advocate for pro-trans policies and transform existing support into meaningful actions.
