Rep. Chávez to families affected by homicides: 'I am working hard on getting justice for your family members'

Nicole Chavez, New Mexico District 35 State Representative, said her ongoing commitment to seeking justice for homicide victims and their families while advocating for stronger public safety measures. This statement was made in a press release on February 6.

"I know how you feel, and I'm in your shoes. And so it's very important for me to continue to do this every single year, and I promise you I am working hard on getting justice for your family members," said Chavez, District 31 NM State Representative. "As a survivor of homicide, I stand before you not only as a legislator, but as someone who knows the pain that never truly fades,"

The press release detailed the Rotunda Roundup Remembrance Memorial for Homicide Victims, which took place on February 6 at the New Mexico State Capitol Rotunda. The event aimed to honor homicide victims, acknowledge the pain of their loved ones, and reflect on the impact of violent crime on communities. Families, lawmakers, and community members gathered to remember those lost to violence.

According to the press release, Representatives Nicole Chávez (R-Albuquerque) and Andrea Reeb (R-Clovis) are sponsoring multiple bills intended to enhance public safety and make communities safer. "I won’t stop until we get these things done," Reeb said. "It remains top priority to make New Mexico a safer place for your kids, your family members, and your loved ones."

AP News reports that Representative Chavez serves New Mexico’s 31st District in the House of Representatives. Her advocacy for public safety and victims' rights is linked to the 2015 fatal shooting of her son, Jaydon Chavez-Silver. Before her legislative role, she worked as the Director of Sales, Outreach, and Retention for Presbyterian Health Plan and served as PTA president at Jackson Middle School for four years.
