The statement from the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter calls for an accelerated transition to clean energy, highlighting that "wind and solar energy don’t fuel wars and violence."
The group criticized U.S. fossil-fuel corporations for what it describes as profiteering from the crisis in Ukraine. They argue that both climate concerns and national security should motivate a shift away from fossil fuels. "We applaud President Biden’s strength and wisdom in banning Russian oil imports," the statement reads, underscoring their view that an economy based on fossil fuels is vulnerable to authoritarian regimes.
The Sierra Club also pointed out financial liabilities associated with the industry, such as abandoned wells costing New Mexico taxpayers billions. They advocate for holding the oil and gas industry accountable while promoting economic activity through renewable energy initiatives.
