State Representative Stefani Lord has expressed her views on a proposal to transform the property used for the New Mexico State Fair into mixed-use developments. She shared her opinion in a December 4 post on X, linking to an article from the Santa Fe New Mexican that announced the new proposal.
"I guarantee some elite politicians will get rich from this," said Lord.
According to KRQE, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham suggested that due to Albuquerque's housing shortage, it is time to redevelop the 236-acre property where Expo New Mexico has operated for 86 years. The governor proposed that the site could be converted into thousands of new housing units and emphasized considering future possibilities. "Thinking about what the next 20 years, maybe 30 years looks like for a world-class, state-of-the-art, high-tech or maybe low-tech, we can decide that as we move forward. Brand new opportunity for families to utilize a more updated version of expo or state fair," said Lujan Grisham in KRQE’s December 3 report.

KOAT reported on the governor's press conference regarding Expo New Mexico's future and noted that up to $500,000 could be allocated for a study to determine the best course of action for the fairgrounds. This study will explore various options while considering existing long-term leases and recent investments. Martin Chavez, senior advisor to the governor, is leading this project. "All options are on the table. That includes keeping the fair where it is and rebuilding in place, moving it [or] redeveloping where the fair is, which would be a real boost for that part of the city of Albuquerque," Chavez told KOAT.
