Michael Rocca, PhD, an associate professor of political science and director of the Master of Public Policy Program at the University of New Mexico, recently provided insights into the implications of the November 5 election for both the United States and New Mexico. Speaking to the GACC board on November 14, Rocca discussed key outcomes from the election.
He highlighted that "Donald Trump won the popular vote because he swung a lot of states," marking a significant achievement for a Republican candidate since 2004. Rocca pointed out Trump's success in flipping numerous counties across the nation, particularly noting his performance in areas with over 25% Hispanic populations and those with less than 50% white residents.
One notable trend Rocca mentioned was a "12% increase" in support for Trump among Latino men. Despite these national shifts, he emphasized that New Mexico remains predominantly Democratic and is expected to resist some proposed federal changes at the state level. He advised board members to closely monitor developments related to filibusters.
