City officials in Albuquerque have commenced construction on the ABQ BioPark's latest garden, "Lebanon and Beyond," set to open in fall 2025. The project, under development for over two years, aims to introduce visitors to the landscapes, architecture, and cultural richness of Lebanon and the Mediterranean.
The garden is partly funded by Robert and Monika Ghattas. Construction began on November 12, with its public debut planned for next year. Robert Ghattas, who hails from a rural village in Lebanon, views this garden as a tribute to Lebanese immigrants who have contributed to New Mexico's cultural diversity.
"The first dedicated Lebanese garden in North America will be right here in our city," stated Samantha Sengel, Chief Administrative Officer of Albuquerque. "It will provide a shared cultural experience for Albuquerque families, connecting our community with the natural wonders of Lebanon and the Mediterranean."
"Lebanon and Beyond" will feature native Mediterranean plants such as the cedar tree found on Lebanon's flag alongside local New Mexican species like the claret cup cactus. The exhibit will incorporate Lebanese architectural elements to blend these two distinct cultures seamlessly.
Additionally, the project includes an extension of the Mediterranean Conservatory designed to house special Mediterranean plants. This space will also serve as a venue for gatherings and educational events.
